A crucial characteristic of the Portland rose or Rosa portlandia was to flower continuously until autumn. They belong to the ancestors of our Hybrid Tea soses of today. This class of roses originated in the 18th century from the Damascene roses in Italy and got its name from Margaret Cavendish Bentnick, Duchess of Portland, who brought one of these roses from Italy to England in the 19th century.
Portland roses have compact, low growth and are very hardy. The flowers are predominantly pink, as well as very strong and wonderfully fragrant and are suitable as historical cut roses. In the 19th century, Portland roses were very popular because of their characteristics, and enthusiasts still value them today as a very romantic rose.
